#ILookLikeASurgeon

How a global movement united thousands

#ILookLikeASurgeon

In August 2015, general surgery residents Dr Heather Logghe MD and Dr Sara Scarlet MD, discussed the need for a campaign against gender stereotypes. What started off as text message between friends grew into a global phenomenon, uniting surgeons around the world. In Australia, USA and the UK, only around 10% of surgeons are female despite now over half of medical graduates being women.

Movements such as #ILookLikeASurgeon are geared towards providing visible gender role models and showing women everywhere that gender is not an obstacle to achieving your career.

"You can't be what you can't see" is the essence of #ILookLikeASurgeon, showing positive solutions and positive role models in surgery.
